Decision called “imprudent and inconsiderate”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Chair Ashley Bland Manlove, D-Kansas City, released the following statement regarding Gov. Mike Parson’s decision to allow the state of emergency declaration for COVID-19 to lapse amidst the spread of the Omicron variant:
“The negligent and callous decision made by the governor to allow Missouri's state of emergency to expire assumes that the COVID-19 pandemic is over, despite the clear and demonstrable evidence to the contrary. On the day Gov. Parson made this announcement, Missouri saw its highest rate of hospitalizations since January of last year, before vaccines were widely available. In rural parts of the state, one Missourian dies from COVID-19 every three days. In urban areas with mask mandates, the rate is a smaller — but still alarming — rate of one person every five days. These are human lives.
“As the elected leaders of our state, we are tasked with giving our healthcare workers all the necessary tools to save the lives of Missourians. With the expiration of the state of emergency, the administration has instead put unnecessary obstacles in place that hinder them from doing their duty. This is a short sighted and uninformed decision from our elected leaders.
“The MLBC condemns this imprudent and inconsiderate decision from the Governor as it puts all Missourians at greater risk of losing more loved ones, or their own lives, to this continuing pandemic.”
