Weber files pro-voter registration bill

Rep. Emily Weber (Tim Bommel/House Communications)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Rep. Emily Weber, D-Kansas City, filed legislation Wednesday designed to increase voter participation in Missouri. Her bill would require realtors and landlords to provide voter registration information to new residents.

“As younger generations have shown they move from place to place more often, it’s more important than ever to ensure they can remain up to date with their local election boards to exercise their right to vote,” Weber said. “Our democracy becomes stronger and more robust when more people vote, and I feel that including local voter registration in a welcoming packet is a good way to increase civic engagement.”

Weber said her idea for the legislation comes from her campaign experience in her own district, which features several apartment buildings that may or may not allow public solicitation for petitions or other political activity. As such, she believes residents of those buildings potentially miss out on proactive outreach efforts by elected officials.

Weber’s legislation would also strike down a provision signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson last year that set harsh limits on voter registration efforts.

HB 1878 (2022) made it illegal for Missourians to register more than 10 voters unless they first registered as a voter registration solicitor. Anyone in violation of that section of the law would suffer a class three election offense, which carries a punishment of up to a year in prison or a fine of up to $250,000.

Weber’s bill is HB 955.
