Nurrenbern files resolution to commemorate COVID-19 victims

Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern (MHDC)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern, D-Kansas City, filed House Concurrent Resolution 77 to designate April 1, 2022 as "COVID-19 Remembrance Day." She hopes the resolution will encourage Missourians to honor the lives those lost to the coronavirus and provide renewed awareness to manage the effects of COVID-19.

“So many Missourians have lost friends, family members and loved ones to the coronavirus, and many Missourians are still coming to terms with the trauma and difficulty of this event.” Nurrenbern said. “This resolution will provide a chance for the state to collectively heal and reflect.”

As of the filing of this resolution, over 19,000 Missourians had died from the virus since the first identified case appeared in the state in March 2020.

Last year, several groups across the country unofficially commemorated March 1, 2021 as a national day of mourning for those killed by the virus, and other city and state governments across the country also held days of mourning and remembrance last year. However, the state of Missouri has yet to commemorate victims of COVID-19 in any official capacity.

“The continued willingness to ignore the coronavirus and the damage it has done to our state does a disservice to its victims and its survivors,” Nurrenbern said.
