First-year rep. championed Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Days
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Rep. Chantelle Nickson-Clark, D-Florissant, celebrated the governor’s signing of Senate Bill 139, which included two provisions she championed during her first year in the Missouri General Assembly.
Her sections of the bills create state days of awareness for breast cancer and domestic violence.
“I’m honored to see my legislation to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Day and Domestic Violence Awareness Day officially go into law today,” Nickson-Clark said. “These days of awareness play an important role in keeping these important issues at the forefront, while also giving Missourians affected by domestic violence or breast cancer a time to reflect and feel seen and honored by the state.”
As a two-time breast cancer survivor herself, Nickson-Clark added the importance of community support and recognition helps buoy the mental resolve of those receiving treatment. She hopes these days of awareness help suffering Missourians understand that they are not alone in their struggles.
Breast Cancer Awareness Day will be commemorated on the first Saturday of October each year, and Domestic Violence Awareness Day will take place on the third Saturday of October each year, both beginning in 2023.
SB 139 was a bipartisan package of state holidays, commemorations, and designations. For information on the other designations put into law by the bill, you can read it in its entirety here.
